I know it really needs no words from me - we all know our chance was on Saturday and this was always likely to be a game too far for us, with players missing through work and injuries, and two games in two days against a side two levels higher. We did compete with them first half, with Tom's penalty save making up for the rash challenge that gave them the pen. 0-0 at the break and, just like the first game, we'd frustrated them in the first half and locals next to me were praising the Hartley team and were surprised at our league level.
Second half was pretty much one-way traffic. Full marks to Big J for playing despite the injury, but after he was forced to go off just before the break, we lacked that presence up front to hold up the ball. We weren't able to produce the kind of passes that might have used Dwayne's pace (and there's a lad that needs to curb his, let's call it, enthusiasm to win the ball). But, let's face it, they were all over us second half, much like in the first game to be honest - the difference maybe was our heads dropped and limbs suddenly felt tired after their first goal, certainly after the second. The scoreline was bitterly disappointing, not that it flattered Whitehawk but it's now there in black and white like a kick in the guts after all the effort the lads put in over the two games.
Whitehawk supporters singing 'easy, easy' after their fourth didn't sit easily with me. We didn't deserve that. Even so, I wish them well in the next round against Maidstone United, if only since the better they do, the better it reflects on us.
But that's over. A great little cameo in what will be a typically long season. There's another big game coming up at the weekend and that's all that matters now.
