It has taken me four days to compose myself enough to write the match reports after this game. I am so proud of the character of my lads, the way they respond when things don't go their way, but at the same time I was so disappointed with the whole game, in particular our performance, that I left the ground full of rage!!
The first half was a real stalemate (not helped by the horrendous weather and a lenient referee), however there were relatively few chances on goal for either team.
The highlight of the first half saw Hartley take the lead through Shane Third. His header, from a well delivered Josh Bromley corner, was the only real moment of quality in the first half.
In the second half, Godalming started to control midfield a little more. The extra man in midfield and direct style meant that when we won the ball back we couldn't retain it for any length of time.
We conceded poorly from a set-piece and fell apart for a 15 minute period, goalkeeper and man of the match, Rhys Jennings, keeping us in the game. However, Godalming scored a second and again looked on top.
Then I saw real grit from the boys. We picked ourselves up, clawed our way back into the game and equalised, again through a great headed goal from Shane Third.
However, Godalming scored a winner with virtually the last kick of the match. Our defence backed off the on-running midfielder and a gap opened up for him to shoot from range.
In truth, it was an awful football match - Godalming did little to play football and did not pass the ball at all well!! We need to learn when and how to control football matches.
I have said many times that I have no problem losing matches as long as we do ourselves justice - however, we lost because we didn't play and we didn't do the basics well enough.
We must learn our lesson. [Graham]
