Tuesday 12th Oct 2010, Hampshire Senior Cup

Hartley Wintney made it eight straight wins when they defeated Wessex Premier League side Christchurch in Round 2 of the Hampshire Senior Cup to book their place in the last 16. It was the second win against higher league opposition in the cup after they beat Blackfield & Langley in Round 1, the game which started them on their 8 match winning run.

After absorbing constant early pressure by the visitors, a flicked header from 18 yards by Jermaine Hamilton, from a well flighted cross by Matt Turnbull, curled over the 'keeper and into the corner to give Hartley the lead 11 minutes into the game. The goal changed the complexion of the game, with Hartley finding their form and Christchurch being put a little more on the back foot after their very bright start.

Manager Neville Roach and Coach Michael Wallace made changes from the team that had beaten Westfield in the league on the previous Saturday, bringing in Matthew Turnbull, Nick Kingston and Ian Daniell in defence for Nathan Stamp, Jonathan Rimmer and Paul Massapuoi. Phil Grove also started on the bench, with Daniel Brownlie coming in to partner Hamilton up front. It again showed the strength in depth of the current squad, something that has been missing in previous seasons.

Both sides made and missed opportunities, perhaps the best falling to Mario Nurse in the second half. A late scare caused Hartley hearts to flutter when the Ref blew for a foul in the Hartley box, but it was awarded to the home side much to the disgust of the visiting players and manager. In truth it could have been a slightly more comfortable win for Hartley and the victory was a deserved one. Defensively we were very strong, with Tom Lovett having another good game between the sticks when called on.

Later in the second half, Phil Grove replaced Daniel Brownlie and Johnny Rimmer replaced the hard-working Jermaine Hamilton. Keiron Thorne's industry and work-rate from box to box earned him the Man of the Match award on a night of good performances throughout the side.

TEAM: Tom Lovett, Matt Turnbull, Nick Kingston, Oliver Bridges, Ian Daniell, Kieron Thorne, Jack Smillie (cap), Simeon Howell, Jermaine Hamilton, Mario Nurse, Daniel Brownlie. Subs: Jonathan Rimmer, Phil Grove, Dan Smith, Nathan Stamp
